Applying for a Mortgage? 7 Credit Steps to Take First

Your credit score can affect whether you’re approved for a mortgage and the rate you’re offered. A few weeks of preparation can go a long way.

1. Pull your credit reports

You can get free reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. Check them for accounts you don’t recognize, wrong balances, or late payments that aren’t yours.

2. Dispute real errors

If something is wrong, file a dispute directly with the bureau that’s reporting it. Keep copies of everything you send.

3. Pay every bill on time

A new late payment right before you apply can do real damage. Set up autopay for at least the minimum on every account.

4. Bring your card balances down

Lower credit utilization usually helps your score. Paying cards down before your statement dates can lower the balances that get reported.

5. Hold off on new credit

New accounts and hard inquiries can lower your score a little and raise questions from underwriters. Wait on new cards and car loans until after closing.

6. Ask your lender which score they use

Mortgage lenders often use specific scoring models. Some give authorized-user accounts less weight, so ask before you count on any one strategy.

7. Give yourself time

Start at least 30–60 days before you plan to apply. Changes take time to show up on your reports.
